Wink

'Galipoli'

I think if we start polls, we should make the heading a bit more concise, so theres no confusion and argument.. cuz probably the best war film was one made in the 70s or 80s. not 90s.

The best movies, well there are quite a few of them.

1. Saving private Ryan
2. Apocalypse Now is good, but too over praised or something
like that
3. The Thin Red Line (origina superior to remake)
4. All quiet on the western front (Original Suprior to remake)
5. Anime: Grave of the Fireflies (Sad movie)
6. Platoon
7. Deer Hunter (Best Vietnam Movie)

and if you like to read try slaughter house 5 if you haven't read it yet.

and Anti-War movies are better than War movies. Period.

Yeah, Anti-war films can be good. I saw Catch 22 a few weeks back, talk about your mind ****s. Every single one of the main characters ends up either dead or insane. Or both. I'd highly recomend it, but not to the easily disturbed.

I voted Saving Private Ryan because that is a pretty good movie - my fav is Forest Gump but does that count as a war movie? O.o oro

deer hunter, apocalypse now redux (love the playboy bunny stuff , schindler's list are all exceptional films.

however, my fave war film is the iron cross, a little-known gem, directed by sam peckinpah (slow-mo king), and depicting the final stages of the war form the german point of view. very depressing, but a worthy study of friendship, loyalty and blind subordination.

Almost there

Gallipoli. With 2 'l's. And that one was set during the first world war. And it's in Turkey, not Africa. The last Oz veteran of the Gallipoli campaign died recently.

If the film you're thinking of had Mel looking a bit more up-to-date it may have been 'The Year of Living Dangerously'. He played a journalist caught up in (? not sure) the Indonesian invasion of East Timor. I could be well wrong on that one.

Grave of the Fireflies and then Doctor Strangelove get my vote. Apocolypse Now and Saving Private Ryan are good too.

Tombstone of the fireflies and gallipoli were pretty good.
Unlike all quiet on the western front.
Anyone here post for FMJ? Ive only heard the yelling at the start but that was pretty entertaining.

Pearl Harbor, I really like the story and the characters, especially Ben Affleck's character.

No offense venus, but Pearl Harbor sucked, of course thats my opinion. Love stories doesn't mix well with war movies.
